Interior renovation and expansion of a commerical office suite
Project Overview
Our client, a non-profit organization investing in climate action, enlisted our services to redesign their offices for their growing team. We expanded their existing suite to create more private offices, and redesigned and sourced new furnishings for their existing open plan office. We provided construction management throughout the project and facilitated furniture installations.
My Contributions
The main designer coordinating with the general contractor to perform weekly site visits and delivery updates to all stakeholders during construction. Designed open plan area furniture layout and space planning. Completed a zoning analysis and existing building review to submit with building permit application. Sourced all new commercial grade furnishings.

We incorporated a new structural opening into an adjacent suite to expand the client’s offices and create additional private office spaces for their growing team. Situated within a historic building, our goal was to preserve the building’s character while transforming it into a modern, functional office environment. The new layout included four private offices and a flexible room intended for use as a break area or additional office space as needed.

Maximizing the employee's access to natural lighting was prioritized by incorporating windows in between offices, allowing daylight to filter through to the spaces not along the exterior walls. We specified Rockwool insulation for its natural sound dampening and thermal regulation qualities.
Design Development
Proposed floor plan showing new 5' wide structural opening between new and existing spaces, and construction of 5 new offices approximately 60 to 75 square feet each.
Construction Management
Throughout the construction phase, we conducted weekly site visits to review progress with the general contractor. Our aim was to ensure the quality of workmanship, verify that the design was being implemented as intended, and offer design solutions for any challenges encountered during construction.

For example, the client wanted to maximize the functionality of as much square footage in the space as possible. During a walk-through with our contractor, we directed their team to create a built-in shelving unit in the gap between the existing fireplace and the wall of the new office to utilize the unused space.

Completed space facing towards new opening between offices. A glass window on wall outside a private office allows in more light from the large exterior wall windows.
Furniture Selections
Through staff interviews and client consultations, a new layout for the open plan office area was developed. The objectives included accommodating six employees while incorporating private areas for senior staff. By replacing their existing fixed desks with adjustable standing desks equipped with frosted privacy screens, it offered personalized and secluded spaces without resorting to cubicles.

Additionally, a standing acoustical privacy screen was installed to establish a dedicated zone for the two senior staff members. Considerations were made to ensure furniture did not block path of travel and allowed enough width to remain an accessible space.
